My guide to activities on Minnesota's North Shore!

Superior Hiking Trail.  Favorite Local Hikes (Go to superiorhiking.org >The Trail>Trail Sections for detailed plans, directions and to reserve a shuttle)

  • Section: Lake County RD 301 (Fors RD) to Minnesota Hw 1 Trail Head
    • Castle Danger to Gooseberry Falls State Park- 8.73 miles
      • One way- needs two cars or shuttle service. 
    • Beaver Bay to Silver Bay- 4.4 miles
      • One way, but short enough you could walk there and back
    • Bean and Bear Lake Loop (See route entitled Silver Bay to Tettegouche State Park and Hwy 1)- 68 miles
      • Loop! Return to your car
  • Section: Hwy 1 Trailhead to Temperance River Wayside Trailhead 
    • Lake County Rd 6 to Lake County Rd 7- 7.6 miles
      • One way, but you could start at the Lake County Rd 6 trailhead and hike to famed Section 13, which is 2.25miles north and return to your car. 
  • PLEASE NOTE: Many of these sections are rigorous with steep climbs. Plan to travel 1 mile per hour unless you are incredibly fit. 


Must-see local waterfalls: Listed south to north

  • Gooseberry Falls (15 minutes south of the yurt)
  • Beaver River (It’s small, but it’s right in town!)
  • Tettegouche State Park (10 minutes north of the yurt)
  • Temperance River State Park (40 minute north of the yurt)
  • Cascade River State Park (55 minutes north of the yurt) 


Visit the local state parks, waterfalls, beaches and overlooks within 15 minutes of the yurt

  • Gooseberry Falls 
  • Tettegouche State Park 
  • Split Rock Light House
  • Black Beach
  • Palisade Head


Watch for the Aurora.  Download an app, like Aurora Alerts to get notified if the chance of viewing is good near your area. 


ACTIVITIES BY LOCATION


Beaver Bay


Green Door Municipal Liquor Store: Occasionally will have bands, trivia, or other events.  Visit facebook.com/beaverbaygreendoor to learn more. 


Red Raven Bike Shop: E-bike and regular bike rentals.  


Gitchagame Bike Trail: Bike south from Beaver Bay to Gooseberry Falls State Park and back on this beautiful paved trail!


The Well: Awesome Massage and Sauna experiences


Shopping: Easy to spot and find right off of Hwy 61

  • Beaver Bay Agate Shop: Cool rocks and agates!
  • Skipping Stones: Cute gift shop located in a historic building
  • Second Hand Rose: for those who love dishes!
  • Cedar Chest: Souvenir shop 


Agate Hunting

  • Next to the Beaver River at the Beaver Bay Club Beach (Trail is directly north of the Beaver River bridge) 


Silver Bay (5 minutes north of the yurt)


Northshore Adventure Park: High ropes course and Ax Throwing


Silver Bay Golf Course


Tail Gunner Charters: Fishing charters and scenic tours on Lake Superior


Two Harbors (30 minutes south of the yurt)


Split Rock Lighthouse. History tours


Castle Danger Brewery.  Brewery and taproom.  Will often have live music, trivia or other events throughout the week.


“Up North”


Sawtooth Outfitters, Tofte (40 minutes north of the yurt): Rent a canoe, kayak, fat bike and more.  They also have guided tours. 


North Shore Winery, Lutsen (45 minutes north of the yurt): Wine Tasting.  Live music on occasion. 


Alpine slide and Summit Express Gondola, Lutsen (45 minutes north of the yurt): Ride the Gondola up the mountain and stay for lunch at the Summit Chalet Eatery


North House Folk School, Grand Marais (60 minutes north of the yurt): Lots of cool activities from birding to craft making. 


Sculpture Yard, Covill (70 minutes north of the yurt): This crazy sculpture garden was started to solve an erosion problem but turned into a must see stop when heading up north.  Although on private land, Chuck, the owner put in walking trails to get a closer look. 


North Shore Guide Service: Guided fly fishing. Fishing rivers from Duluth to Grand Marais.
